The date of the origin of Christ Church Girls High School might be traced even much before the date of its official existance. In the dates of child marriage, female infanticide widow burning system –when emancipation of woman was a dream even undreamt of;was setup Christ Church Girls School, and Christ Church Girls H.S. School indeed owes its birth to one energetic lady Missionary, Miss. Henrietta J . Neele and her associateMiss Alice Sampson, who came down all the way from London .
The school was then located at Christ Church Parsonage, 182, Cornwallis Square ,Kolkata . Miss Neele had identified herself with the Bengalis and tried heart and soul for the spread of education through Bengali medium schools, and the school ,ChristChurch ,gradually marched on and fully justified its existence.
After Miss Sampson and Miss Wally, Miss Rachel Jaylor occupied the stage ofChrist church school for a good number of fruitful years and it was during her time in 1932, that the school had been shifted present site - here in Clive House , Dum Dum, to meet a real need of the locality. During the Second World War, the school campus had been requisitioned by the army and hence had been shifted to Krishnanagar Queen's school, in the District of Nadia , for a brief period.
Finally, the school got re-shifted to its own premises in Dum Dum and the seedling that was planted 125 years ago by Miss. Neele has gradually transformed into gigantic tree, firmly rooted, and has grown, not merely in size during the year, but also in here role of education and emancipating women, which was further carried on by the valuable contribution of Miss. A.S. Mummen from 1956 to 1986.
The charge was then passed on to Mrs. Sucheta Roy, the present Headmistress and under her, the school has witnessed various changes in keeping with the needs of time. It has developed a modern and scientific outlook and the changes brought about by her – was opening the H.S section, which though in its infancy is functioning remarkably. The school has a newly constructed building with modern amenities for classes XI and XII , air conditioned computer rooms and a well equipped library, the work of which is an its way of completion.
These developments will not only benefit students in their days in school, but alsoin their life afterwards and thus contribute greatly in shaping and moulding them into being the fit citizens of a modern era.
Hence it will not be an exaggeration on our part if we state that the present Headmistress, along with the managing committee and the team of teaching and nonteaching staff by our consolidated efforts are striving constantly to make true the dreams of our forerunners in an all round development of the institution that has truly a chequered history. |
